I’m excited to share that my painting History will be included in the group exhibition Object Permanence, curated by @dm61889 and @nicole_basilone at @novadogallery

The exhibition explores the instability of perception, identity, and material reality in a contemporary world shaped by memory, illusion, and simulacra.

Excerpt from the curatorial statement:
“While the artists all attempt to work through surface, identity, and material in the construction of objects, the ideas behind the work never stay truly permanent. Each piece acts as a boundary, post markers that delineate a space that the ideas can move within. The gallery itself stands in as the physical and metaphorical place for this conversation. By bringing this grouping of artists together, the attempt is to find the thread that connects disparate visual languages and establish a commonality among individual thought processes. Ultimately the conversation attempts to be more spiral than circle, allowing ideas to loop back around but at ever changing vantage points…”

Taking inspiration from the Lotus Sutra, this exhibition reimagines the Parable of the Burning House, one of the most important stories from the sutra. The story describes a vast house, owned by a very rich man, which suddenly catches fire. The man’s children are so busy playing that they do not notice or believe that the house is burning. In order to save them, he promises to give them his riches if they leave the house. In the story, the burning house represents the world of suffering—or samsara—and the man’s riches represent the Buddha’s teachings of liberation—nirvana. However, the sutra also teaches that this is just a story. In truth, there is no way out of the house. We can only find liberation within the flames. The world of suffering is the world of liberation—to awaken to suffering is liberation itself.

Central to the story, and to the exhibition, is the image of fire in its many forms. Fire is destruction and death, but it’s also energy, purification, rebirth, life itself. Flames destroy but they also bloom. Alongside fire, the works in the exhibition also explore themes of attention and awareness, sexuality and desire, nature, beauty, ritual, devotion, and grief. The exhibition seeks to present these images in a way that challenges conventional dualities, including the separation between suffering and liberation.

The exhibition features ten AAPI artists from around the country, including Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, working in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and video. Exhibited artists are Christian Bañez, Martin Castro, Jon Chao, Anne Chen, Eriko Hattori, Marius Keo Marjolin, Brent Nakamoto, Anthony Park Kascak, Sara Tang, and Song Watkins Park.

☘️🌹My painting Imposter is currently on view @1800_g_cadd through 10/11.

This was the very first painting in this body of work. I was going through a big life shift and felt an urgency to understand myself again. I had taken a break from making art because I didn’t feel honest in my work anymore, and that distance made even walking into the studio feel intimidating.

So I set one clear goal for this piece: to be honest with my work, with myself, and with whoever would see it. I painted myself nude as a way to show vulnerability and reclaim a sense of autonomy and power. I was thinking about imposter syndrome as both an artist and educator, and a childhood memory came back to me—me and my friends putting rose thorns on our noses pretending to be rhinos. Somehow that fear I was carrying started to feel illogical and almost humorous in contrast.

In the composition, I played with the relationship between the man-made (the desk), the human body (myself), and nature (the background). I genuinely had fun painting this, and after a year with this series, I’ve never felt more connected to my studio, my work, and my audience.

From Sept 11–17, I joined the Cuttyhunk Island Fall Residency, Session #2, with 11 amazing artists, @gobbeldigook @dilrubatayfun @_gosha.studio @grace.makes @juliettevaissiere @lindsyhalleckson @studiolisalee @maya.brodsky @shengart18 @tbone10023 @yanabeylinson visiting mentor @chezdeleget , and visiting artist @aleah_chapin.

It was both my first time in Massachusetts and my very first residency, and Cuttyhunk Island felt nothing short of magical. Each day began with sunrise, a jog along the shore, and the sea breeze in the air. Days unfolded to the rhythm of waves and a sky of cerulean blue reflecting the ocean, while nights were filled with endless stars. Avalon, the historic home where we stayed, felt like both a grounding presence and a warm embrace.

The week was a constant mix of learning, adventure, and humility. I’m deeply grateful for the chance to share this experience with such generous, creative spirits. Though it passed quickly, it carried lasting weight—an experience that shifted something within me. I left with a stronger sense of my voice, courage, and the reminder of how trust, support, and encouragement can shape growth.

The residency staff/amazing artists @kevinfordpainter @aimeecharlesworth @claudinelopes.6 @deblm114 and Lisa cared for us with such kindness, treating us to incredible meals, while the Cuttyhunk community welcomed us with warmth—a wave, a greeting, a smile that made the island feel like home. The whole experience felt almost dreamlike, like returning to a grandmother’s house in the countryside, a place familiar yet entirely new.

I carry this time forward as a reminder of connection, bravery, and the joy of living fully in the moment.

The whole experience felt almost dreamlike, like returning to a grandmother’s house in the countryside, a place familiar yet entirely new.

I carry this time forward as a reminder of connection, bravery, and the joy of living fully in the moment.
